I. Main features

 

 

  • A PLC or CNC control system is used to achieve precise digital control of welding parameters (current, voltage, speed, and oscillation).
  • Low defect rate: The automated process is stable, reducing the risk of defects such as porosity, slag inclusions, and incomplete fusion.
  • Due to the narrow bevel, the total heat input is small, greatly reducing welding deformation and residual stress.
  • Shorter welding time and lower energy consumption.

1.Machine Tool

  • Bed/Frame: Robust steel structure ensuring stability.
  • Headstock and Tailstock Positioner: The headstock drive (usually a frequency converter or servo motor) rotates the hydraulic cylinder, while the tailstock provides support. This is the most common configuration. 
  • Welding Manipulator: Supports the welding torch feeding mechanism, enabling vertical, horizontal, and forward/backward movement and precise adjustments.

III.Commonly used welding processes

 

 

Narrow gap welding of hydraulic cylinders mainly employs two processes (the page shows narrow gap gas shielded welding):

  • Narrow gap submerged arc welding: The most widely used. Particularly suitable for thick, large-diameter carbon steel and low alloy steel cylinders.

Uses flux protection, resulting in high-quality, aesthetically pleasing welds with no spatter, suitable for heavy-duty applications.

Typically single-wire welding.

  • Narrow gap gas shielded welding: Primarily narrow gap MAG welding.

Uses mixed gas protection, potentially offering higher deposition efficiency and more flexible heat input.

Requires high bevel cleanliness but eliminates the need for flux treatment, making it more suitable for certain alloy steels or production environments.
